Visit Midtown and the New Detroit
By Howard Berenbon
If you been to Detroit lately you'll see a great change, especially in Midtown (between Grand Boulevard and Mack. Down Woodward Ave from the Grand Blvd you'll see a new site: the commuter train track in the center preparing to move people to and from the downtown area. Midtown, with its grand Detroit Art Institute (comparable to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City) and acclaimed Wayne State University, medical center and general campus, is also growing. The newly renovated and expanded student center is a must see with its new open look (like a hotel lobby), new restaurants in the food court and all new furniture. Walking around the 1/2 x 1/2 mile campus (approximately) with center mall, you'll find other buildings under renovation. It's a vibrant and busy learning atmosphere. Hungry students and staff have several new options including the newly renovated Towers Cafe, an inexpensive all-you-can-eat buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner, now with a Mongolian grill. Vegans and vegetarians won't be disappointed, in fact, one of the few kosher/hallel restaurants in the Detroit area is on campus called Gold 'n' Greens (named after the Wayne State colors). It's on the first floor in Ghafari Hall - 695 Williams Mall. They offer vegan pizza, bean burgers, soups, salads, deserts and also several prepared dishes like vegetarian Sloppy Joe and sushi, vegan style, changing daily. In 2015 they introduced fish dishes, prepared several ways. Other venues on campus include is Einstein Bros. Bagels, Subway and Jimmy John's for subs, Dunkin' Donuts, Taco Bell, Panda Express and Shangri La for Chinese, La Pita Fresh and Biblos for great Middle Eastern dishes, the Traffic Jam for burgers, homemade bread and brew. If you have deep pockets, you'll love The Whittier on Woodward, for fine dining. For some great barbecue meats (and some vegan dishes), visit Slows to Go, a carry out place a few blocks off campus on Cass Ave. If you want to eat, they do offer a counter and a few tables for seating.
For theater and music in Midtown, you'll find the Music Hall on Woodward, The Fisher Theatre on West Grand Boulevard and the Opera House downtown on Broadway. For sports, you'll enjoy Ford Field for professional football home of the Detroit Lions and Comerica Park for baseball with the Detroit Tigers. If you haven't been to Detroit lately, now is the time!
